Master

With all the rain tracking out in the shop is not practical. The rain on the roof sounds awesome but, the mics also do a great job of picking it up!

With Steve on a much needed trip home to recoup his faculties, Cliff, Todd and myself have been tracking in the basement of mom's house. Cliff has a beautiful acoustic piece titled "Ivory Rose" that we have been working on while the weather sorts itself out. The song is slated to be on the bands upcoming release "Hell Lives".

Life is good here on the Wheeler Ranch, mom is well and our new chickens are growing fast. I am not a big fan of California but, here on the ranch, the magic is strong.

Studio

I have been traveling much of late but have finally settled at our family home in Vacaville CA. The Wheeler Ranch is a magical place of which I am sure I will comment upon more in the future. With a layover at Dark Hollow Studios in Medford OR last weekend, I was able to do some engineering and lay down some bass/drum tracks to a song I have been working on. "Robins and Crows" started as a vocal/acoustic guitar piece that I am now trying to take to the next level, so to speak.

I arrived at the ranch Monday afternoon and by Tuesday we were laying tracks with Half-N-Half and playing around with mic placement, gear and other such sundry "have to do's". Wednesday brought heavy rain that ruined any chance of recording out in the shop and has continued up to this writing. The metal roof of dads shop saw to that. In the mean time I have been working on my Mastering suite and acoustically treating the basement mix area in the family home.

Here are a few pics of our setup. It needs a little more refinement but overall, I am happy with the results to tape so far.

Studio

Last weekend my close friends Bean and Hafjac came over and helped me rack up some old gear. Bean moved stuff around and Hafy manned the fillips tip screw driver. Best of all, they handled my "do it my way personality" pretty damn well. I thank you Brothers.

Some of the gear has not seen tron flow for over 10 years and i was hoping all the tubes would light up and... they did! Behringer tube pre's and compressor/gates will handle incoming signal duties. Not top of the line stuff by any stretch of the imagination but, when used properly they sound very good. In live settings they help control the bleed from other mic's. I am still far away from building my studio into one with true isolation so they help in that environment as well. At this point better gear would not produce better results.

I recently picked up some more microphones, stands, cables and tie-wraps. I found a 16x4 snake at a pawn shop on the cheap and picked up a reference mic at the same time. Now days instead of needing expensive outboard gear to shoot (measure frequency response) a room you can use a laptop, free software and some white noise (full spectrum noise). I will be shooting both the master studio and the tracking studio in preparation for some acoustical treatment.

I am mixing a new track for the Half-N-Half album titled "Dont" and am getting more excited every day to go back to the family ranch in Vacaville CA and record.

Eight years ago i was recording in here. Over the ensuing years i have continued to jam with close friends, build motorcycles here and store way to much crap. Thinning the crap out now and slowly bringing her back to the former status of "Studio".

Release

As promised i have the first song release from PsychoManifesto Music Production.

Half-N-Half are a Vacaville CA based rock band that has gone through many iterations since inception on Jan 13 1995.

Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter Cliff Hatcher has been refining his music for many years now.
Bassist Todd Shair has been working with Cliff since 2009 and brings a very tasty vibe with his unique style.
In 2011 Steve Wheeler joined as percussionist and the songs really drive with him behind the wheel.
I joined the group as producer/engineer in 2011 as well.

During our last session in 2013 the band invited me to be a guest vocalist on their upcoming album and of course, i said yes.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce to you Half-N-Half and the title track from the upcoming release. "Hell Lives"
