Half-N-Half upcoming Release

The album is now in post production. Looking at around the middle of August for full release. Slightly behind original release date but life does get in the way sometimes. These two songs are planned to "bookend" the record with "Hell Lives" opening and "Forever There" closing.
Thanks to all for your support.

Studio

I have been traveling much of late but have finally settled at our family home in Vacaville CA. The Wheeler Ranch is a magical place of which I am sure I will comment upon more in the future. With a layover at Dark Hollow Studios in Medford OR last weekend, I was able to do some engineering and lay down some bass/drum tracks to a song I have been working on. "Robins and Crows" started as a vocal/acoustic guitar piece that I am now trying to take to the next level, so to speak.

I arrived at the ranch Monday afternoon and by Tuesday we were laying tracks with Half-N-Half and playing around with mic placement, gear and other such sundry "have to do's". Wednesday brought heavy rain that ruined any chance of recording out in the shop and has continued up to this writing. The metal roof of dads shop saw to that. In the mean time I have been working on my Mastering suite and acoustically treating the basement mix area in the family home.

Here are a few pics of our setup. It needs a little more refinement but overall, I am happy with the results to tape so far.

Studio

Last weekend my close friends Bean and Hafjac came over and helped me rack up some old gear. Bean moved stuff around and Hafy manned the fillips tip screw driver. Best of all, they handled my "do it my way personality" pretty damn well. I thank you Brothers.

Some of the gear has not seen tron flow for over 10 years and i was hoping all the tubes would light up and... they did! Behringer tube pre's and compressor/gates will handle incoming signal duties. Not top of the line stuff by any stretch of the imagination but, when used properly they sound very good. In live settings they help control the bleed from other mic's. I am still far away from building my studio into one with true isolation so they help in that environment as well. At this point better gear would not produce better results.

I recently picked up some more microphones, stands, cables and tie-wraps. I found a 16x4 snake at a pawn shop on the cheap and picked up a reference mic at the same time. Now days instead of needing expensive outboard gear to shoot (measure frequency response) a room you can use a laptop, free software and some white noise (full spectrum noise). I will be shooting both the master studio and the tracking studio in preparation for some acoustical treatment.

I am mixing a new track for the Half-N-Half album titled "Dont" and am getting more excited every day to go back to the family ranch in Vacaville CA and record.

Eight years ago i was recording in here. Over the ensuing years i have continued to jam with close friends, build motorcycles here and store way to much crap. Thinning the crap out now and slowly bringing her back to the former status of "Studio".

Release

As promised i have the first song release from PsychoManifesto Music Production.

Half-N-Half are a Vacaville CA based rock band that has gone through many iterations since inception on Jan 13 1995.

Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter Cliff Hatcher has been refining his music for many years now.
Bassist Todd Shair has been working with Cliff since 2009 and brings a very tasty vibe with his unique style.
In 2011 Steve Wheeler joined as percussionist and the songs really drive with him behind the wheel.
I joined the group as producer/engineer in 2011 as well.

During our last session in 2013 the band invited me to be a guest vocalist on their upcoming album and of course, i said yes.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce to you Half-N-Half and the title track from the upcoming release. "Hell Lives"

Master

Wow man.... the stuff is coming together. I put up the table that the wife gave me for Christmas and set up my "B" monitor system. A $10.00 set of bookshelf speakers made in the 70's, an Alesis RA-100 reference amplifier and crappy boom box. Listing to some Streetlight Manifesto as i write this. The speakers sound pretty good and they should with the Marantz drivers that are stuffed in em'. The really cool part is they are factory seconds from a knock off brand. Does not get much better.

I won a pair of vintage Shure SM 57 dynamic cardioid mics off of the Egay at a very good price and should see them in a week or so. An all around work horse of a mic that can be used on percussion, guitars, horns and well, just about anything. Hoping to score a Pro-Co 16 channel snake i found a couple of towns away just waiting to hear back from the dude.

I pulled my two Tascam reel to reel decks out of mothballs. They are both 1/2" format with 8 and 16 tracks respectively. I am hoping that the 16 track is still in good shape but if not the 8 track will do just fine. Analog is the way to go with drums and bass if you want that fat warm sound.

I have obsessively been watching videos on You Tube of Eddie Kramer, who engineered for the likes of Jimi Hendrix, KISS and Led-Zeppelin. The man is very passionate about is art and started his career in England when all you had to work with was 4 tracks and a handful of compressors and EQ's. He now embraces the digital side of recording but uses a hybrid approach of which, with my limited resources, i am trying to emulate. The next time you listen to Led-Zeppelin 2, Jimi Hendrix Experience or KISS Alive, it was Eddie Kramer who produced, engineered and/or mixed those great classic albums. I even found an original demo he recorded of KISS on a 4 track reel to reel. "Black Diamond" is the same song you here on the record but mixed to 4 tracks. Drums on the right, bass to the left etc. Very different sounding but very good too. The 6 songs he recorded for the band is what got KISS there first record contract. Eddie must be in his 60's now and as far as i know is still recording and producing to this day. The word "inspirational" falls way short of the mark.

The more i mix the better my ears are getting. Good to be back in the game after so many years.

Master

It has been a while since i have updated you all on progress with my mix/master studio. Near the end of last year i bought another piece of gear off the ol' Egay so to bring my live capture capabilities up to 16 tracks. I found a Presonus Digimax FS and made the seller an offer. Almost two weeks later it finally arrived.

There were several reasons that i chose this unit. First and foremost it is a Presonus product and i figured they would play nice together. Second, the inputs are on the front of the unit like my 1818VSL. As i designed my live capture rig it was imperative that i have easy access to switch around mikes to different channels. Finally, not unlike the outboard gear i will be using, the FS unit is tried and true. It has been around since 2006 and although it is out of production now it has a great reputation as a mic preamp. Also, the price was right at $275.00.

It did not take long at all to get the two units synced together and the input/output configured. Using a vocal mic and moving it around to different inputs helped me troubleshoot the bugs out.

My next step is to get the gear rack mounted into road cases. This will include some gear i found in what i thought were empty cases. Turns out i did not sell all my processing gear after all.

My next update will chronicle the racking of my gear and cabling the side chain processing units. Also, i finally got permission from my better half to move my my setup away from the side wall and do some acoustical treatment. The speaker location is causing some horrendous low frequency mud while i am mixing, very hard to work around. Been watching some video's on how to build my bass traps and other absorption pieces using stuff from the local home improvement store.
